| The group learns how to look under logs. Roll them towards you; if there's a
snake under there, the log will be between you and it! And remember to put the log back
where you found it. |
Look what we found! A spotted salamander. He'll live under here all year, and just come
out on one night in the spring to find a mate. |
Now we can get a closer look. Always wet your hands before picking up a salamander.
They breathe through their skin; it's very sensitive and it needs to stay wet. It's very
important to make sure you don't damage it with the oils on your hands. |
| Hmmm....Fascinating...they're really cute... |
Now we release the salamander. Don't put the log down on top of him! You might
squish him. Put him down and let him crawl under on his own. Make sure it's still nice and moist
under there; if a lot of dry leaves get under the log, it'll just dry the salamander out. |
We also found a marbled salamander. |
| Can you believe it? We found this whole group of spotted salamanders under one log! |
Here's a real rare treat. It's a red eft! It's what an eastern red-spotted newt turns into when
it wants to live on land. We hardly ever see them around here, but we found 4 today! |
