What is the Alpine Tundra?
The alpine tundra is an enviroment so harsh that no trees can grow. Well-adapted plants and animals are its only residents. The weather is quick to change, and the growing season is short. However, many animals and plants depend upon this fragile ecosystem above the treeline. See the Vegetation and Wildlife pages for more information.

Climate
The alpine tundra is home to high winds, fierce storms, pristine calm, and beautiful sunny days. Here, the weather can change almost instantly from a sunny summer day to a huge thunderstorm. During the night, the temperature always falls below freezing, while it can be very warm during the day. The growing season is short, only 180 days.

Location
The alpine tundra can be found at any latitude on Earth. It is the elevation that matters, as the alpine tundra is always above the treeline (by definition!). However, treeline varies. In Alaska, it is 3,500 feet above sea level, while in Mexico it is 13,500 feet above sea level. Even Hawai'i has some alpine tundra, starting at an elevation of 9,000 feet. In Colorado, treeline is around 11,500 feet.

Other Cool Stuff
Here are some puzzles I designed related to the alpine tundra. They are .pdf documents that can be printed and filled in. This is also where I will put any cool links I find.
